Which heating system should I choose for my home? Comparison between gas, oil, electricity and heat pumps

Σύγκριση συστημάτων θέρμασης για κατοικίες στην ελλάδα

Choosing a heating system is one of the most critical decisions when building or renovating a home. At Ikon Constructions, we know that efficiency, economy and compatibility with future energy standards are key factors in a modern home. That’s why we’ve compiled below the main options used in the country today, along with their strengths and weaknesses, to help you make the right choice.

Heating oil – The traditional solution
Oil remains one of the most widespread options, especially in areas without access to natural gas.

Advantages:

Available almost everywhere in Greece
High calorific value

Disadvantages:

High and unstable cost
High environmental burden
Requirement for storage tank
Increased cost per hour of operation (indicatively 187€/month for 90sqm apartment)

Natural Gas – Modern, but with limitations

Natural gas has been gaining ground in recent years due to lower costs and cleaner combustion.

Advantages:

More economical to use than oil
Cleaner combustion, less pollutants
No tank required
Provides domestic hot water

Disadvantages:

Only available in areas with a grid
Installation costs can be high
Prices affected by international developments
Indicative monthly cost: about 134€/month for a 90sqm house

Electricity – Comfortable but expensive option

Electricity heating (air conditioners, electric heaters and boilers) is particularly easy to install and operate, but may significantly increase bills.

Advantages:

No burner or tank maintenance required
Ideal for small houses or cottages
Safe and easy to use

Disadvantages:

High operating costs, especially for heating a full house
Low efficiency in large spaces

Indicative costs:

With air conditioners: about 117€/month
With electric heaters: more than 350€/month

Heat pumps – The future of home heating

Heat pumps combine efficiency, savings and ecological operation. They are today the most modern and sustainable choice for heating and cooling.

Advantages:

Extremely low operating costs
Extremely low cost and low energy consumption
Ideal for new energy efficient homes
Combine energy-efficient and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems

Disadvantages:

Good thermal insulation required for maximum efficiency
Lower heating value
Higher initial installation costs (from 6.000€ and above)
Not suitable in areas with very low outdoor temperatures

What applies from 2030 and why it matters now

According to European guidelines and new legislation that will be implemented by 2030, all new buildings will have to be zero-emission buildings. This means that traditional forms of high-emission heating, such as oil boilers, will not be allowed.

What we choose at Ikon Constructions

At Ikon Constructions, we design today with an eye on tomorrow. All of our new complexes are built exclusively with heat pump systems for heating and cooling. In addition, the civil engineer and head of the company, Mr. Angelos Economou, suggests the strategic use of combined systems, e.g. heat pumps combined with underfloor heating, air conditioners and energy fireplaces, for optimal comfort and performance in every season.

In this way, we ensure that every new home we deliver is energy efficient, sustainable and future ready.

Conclusions

Choosing a heating source is not just a technical decision – it’s an investment in your everyday comfort, operating costs and environmental footprint. Given future obligations and the need for energy upgrades, heat pumps are the wisest choice for a modern, sustainable and economical home.
